African AmericansThroughout history and time, African Americans have been the victims of racial oppression. Even though they were discriminated against, they have always supported their nation, especially in wartime. When World War II broke out, over 2.5 million black men registered for the draft. One million served as draftees or volunteers in all of the branches of the Armed Forces during the conflict. Along with black men, black women also came to the defense of the nation by joining the Women's Army Corps. African Americans in WWII were able to pave the path for opportunity, granting them the title of the greatest generation.
