Iwo JimaWith the Japanese appearing as a threat, U.S. soldiers were in need of a base near the Japanese coast. Three U.S. marine divisions invaded Iwo Jima in February of 1945. The Battle of Iwo Jima proved to be a difficult task, as 23,000 Japanese army and navy troops fought against U.S. soldiers through a network of caves, dugouts, tunnels and underground installations. The battle resulted in the death of 5,900 American troops. The Battle of Iwo Jima ended on March 26, 1945, and the island was secured by Americans.
