Women's Airforce Service PilotsA lesser-known role that women played was being WASPs. These women had already obtained their pilot’s license prior to their service, and became the first women to fly American military aircraft. They transported cargo and participated in simulation strafing and target missions. They flew more than 60 million miles in flight distances and freed thousands of male U.S. pilots for active duty in the war. Out 1,000 WASPs that served, 38 lost their lives. These women were considered service employees, and where not given military honors until recognized in 1977, where they received the well deserved Congressional Gold Medal.
